Ruth was born January 19, 1918. She has lived in and around Cincinnati her whole life. She was the youngest of 3 daughters born to Edwin and Henrietta (Schneider) Reif. A child of the Great depression, Ruth’s hardships started with the early death of her mother. She was unfortunate in that she never knew her mother because when Ruth was 6 months old, her mother died during the flu epidemic of 1918. Her father remarried to have someone to help care for his children. However his new wife turned out to be a “typical uncaring stepmother” so her childhood was not a pleasant one .
Ruth graduated from Hughes High School in 1935. She married her best friend, John (Jack) Howard Fishter on June 11, 1935 - the day after her graduation. They had met at a dance held at Inwood Park and continued to date through high school. She and Jack enjoyed the dances held at Inwood Park each week as well as bowling on several leagues through the years. They were both active members of several Masonic organizations and Ruth was a proud member of the Eastern Star.
One year they flew to New York City and saw the ball drop on New Years Eve in Times Square. That trip was the only occasion in her life that she ever flew in a plane.
Ruth worked for a while at the Poques Department Store. She and Jack opened their own Dot Food Store in Norwood in 1948 where she became a “produce expert” after attending a Dot Food Store sponsored produce school!
Besides being a homemaker and a great cook, she also sewed. Her daughters remember how Ruth “helped” Santa when they were growing up by sewing doll clothes that would then be left out for Santa’s helpers to pick up after they had gone to bed. She was also handy at turning old worn out socks into dolls for the girls to play with.
She has three daughters, Pat, Carol, and Peggy. Both Pat and Carol and their spouses live in the Cincinnati area and Peggy and her husband live in Missouri. Ruth has ten grandchildren, 14 great grand children and 3 great great grandchildren. The family feels fortunate that two 5 generation pictures were taken to pass on to future generations. The 3rd group live out of state and so that family was never able to get together for such a picture.
Ruth spent the past 7 years living at the Lodge Nursing Care Center in their Shelter Point area located in Loveland. She passed away at 11:42PM December 19, 2011 – one month to the day short of her 94th birthday.
