The Reverend Lucy Cormany Hay Vick died in hospice on Sunday, June 25th, from a rare form of unrelenting cancer. She had retired as the Spiritual Care Manager at Mercy Fairfield Hospital in Cincinnati. Lucy was the first of two late-in-life gifts to Hazel and Willard C Hay, Sr. She grew up in Rome, Georgia, worshiped at First Baptist Church, graduated from Furman University with degrees in music and education, and worked in Rome as a Social Worker at the Family and Children's Services office. During this tense 1970's period in Georgia, Lucy's belief in human rights and equality for all people in her community led her to attend meetings secretly held with local African American civil rights leaders and together the determined group ensured a successful, smooth desegregation period in Rome.
Lucy moved to Louisville, Kentucky, for a brief stay and then to the Cincinnati area with her son, John David Vick, Jr., who grew up in Mariemont. Many in the area knew Lucy from her years at the Mariemont Church where she was the church administrator. She was also well known for her joyful and impressive musical gifts as a pianist or organist for hundreds of services and weddings.
Lucy felt called to complete a Masters Degree in Religious Studies at Mount St. Joseph University and serve as a hospital Chaplain. Her Pastoral Ordination ceremony was held in her beloved home church in Rome where Lucy became the first female at the church to earn this designation. The new career gave her another outlet for her boundless, non-judgmental approach to God's service. She modeled inclusive loving outreach in the Mercy Health Fairfield Hospital and ministered to innumerable patients of all religious affiliations. Staff as well as patients sought her supportive comforting counsel.
In retirement, Lucy continued to share her faith, humor, and compassion with everyone from bridge club buddies to her favorite Physical Therapist. Her friendship is irreplaceable, and she will forever be in our hearts.
She is survived by her son David (Emily); her brother Willard C "Dub" Hay, Jr. (Lyn); nephew Scott Hay (Lauren) and great nephews Franklin and Henry Hay; and nephew Chris Hay (Jana) and great nieces Hazel and Ruby Hay.
Donations to your favorite charity would honor Lucy's memory.
A memorial service will be held on July 27th at 2PM at the Mariemont Community Church Old Chapel.
